A Map of Horror

A working taxonomy of the horror genre, built out from the original thread. 646 title entries across 45 shelves, the borders, and nine national cinemas. Every title links to where to watch it.

The argument

Horror and thriller are collapsing into one marketing category, and the collapse is backwards. It is treated as horror being absorbed into thriller — horror as the intense end of a thriller spectrum, thriller as the respectable parent. That gets the sizes wrong.

Consider what "thriller" is being asked to hold. Nerve (2016) is a thriller: teenagers take dares from an app, and one of them rides a motorcycle blindfolded at speed through city traffic. Zodiac is a thriller. Rear Window is a thriller. Fight Club is a thriller. These four films share almost nothing — not a tone, not a fear, not an audience, not a decade. Thriller is doing so little work that it can cover a dare app and a 70s serial-killer investigation with the same word.

Now consider what horror is being asked to fit inside that. This map holds 48 categories, and each of the following could stand alone as a top-level genre by any standard we apply to comedy or western or musical: supernatural horror (its own cosmology, its own rules, its own century of tradition); slasher (a body count, archetypes, set-piece kills, a final girl — more internal grammar than the entire thriller category); body horror (Cronenberg to Ducournau — the fear is anatomical, not situational); cosmic horror (a philosophical position with a film form attached); survival and captivity horror (mechanical, not emotional — where Girl Has to Kill Everyone lives); folk horror (the land, the village, the old practice, with its own national traditions in at least six countries); creature and kaiju (from Jaws to Shin Godzilla — scale is the entire subject); exploitation and grindhouse (a production mode, a distribution history, and an aesthetic, not just a violence level).

Each of those has more defined internal rules than "thriller" does. Each has its own canon, its own national schools, its own decade-cycles, its own audience that will not cross over. A person who loves Lake Mungo may have no use for The Devil's Rejects, and neither of them is confused about what they are watching.

The vastness is the point. Horror is not a genre that got intense. It is a family of genres that never got separated, and the thriller merger is making that worse — flattening a family into a mood.

Part one: the thread

I don't watch a lot of horror movies maybe like I used to, but when I do watch movies that's what I usually pick. I'm not against comedy movies — the three movies we watched almost every day as kids were Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Blow, and Dazed and Confused, so not exactly the scariest movies. But we would always show new people Hostel and things. I write this thread because I want to discuss good and then sometimes obscure horror movies if anyone knows of any, and because some people say "I don't like horror movies" and may not understand all that exists. And maybe a lot of people don't.

When I was in like 1st grade and my sister was in kindergarten, we were hiding behind the couch watching Candyman, and that was maybe the first scary movie we saw. My sister was scared to be near a mirror alone for at least a week. After that, my mom took me to the movies to see rated R movies, and by 3rd grade there are kids asking me to describe movies to them because they'd never be allowed to see them.

By middle school we are at Blockbuster once a day getting two movies because we are members. I've seen BAD movies. Low, low budget movies. Example: S.I.C.K.: Serial Insane Clown Killer. Costumes: K Mart.

The usual setup

Most people know the cabin movie. But it could be:

It could be anything really, but it starts off casual, showing the characters kind of having fun even. Often it's college kids or teenagers, a reuniting group of friends, or a group that volunteered for a clinical trial — some casual group that can get to know each other, and it gets to where they're all comfortable as something builds up and gets to a boil. But usually there was some kind of warning. Saw is a different model, where that's not how everyone meets. But the "fun casual build-up" is the cliché horror intro. Then it happens, whatever it is.

Horror doesn't have clean edges. Three genres bleed into it constantly, and knowing where the seam is helps you sort everything else.

Thriller — light horror all around

The mechanism is dread and pressure rather than monstrosity. Psychological thriller is the useful subgenre name here.

The proposal

If the categories in Part Three were separated the way film culture separates comedy from drama from western, horror would resolve into roughly eight standalone genres, each with subgenres of its own:

Thriller, under this scheme, stops being horror's parent and becomes what it actually is: a tone available to any of the eight, the same way suspense is available to a western. Nerve keeps its motorcycle. It just stops being filed next to Martyrs.
